Project Concept

This project will be a continuation and a deeper exploration into the Memory Palace project in which I focused on mapping the route the River Lea takes to the Thames. Being a short project, I started my route at Walthamstow Marshes which is not the start of the river. In this project I want to explore further up the River Lea, though not all the way to where it begins. My main aim is to document as much of the river’s course as I can and I want to use this project as an opportunity to experiment with using light sensitive paper to make alternative imagery. My themes are about mapping, memory and nature. From the city, travelling north up the River Lea, the landscape changes into being much more rural and I want to document these changes. I’ll research Susan Derges’ work, looking particularly at her photographs created by submerging light sensitive paper in water, which links to my themes, as well as looking into Hamish Fulton’s work which links to mapping. I will research artists who use alternative photographic techniques and processes. I might use ceramic processes too (linking to the ceramic fragments I found), I will need access to clay and a kiln (which I have) and I might experiment with printing onto clay, so I’ll need to get a screen made at college.
